In a vertiquote (formerly called a vertical anaquote), a phrase is divided into threes vertically rather than horizontally. The columns are listed alphabetically; the solver rearranges them to form the message. For example:

VERTIQUIP (3 6-4 4-4 5 3 3 10 10: *11.)

E E E E E E F H L L L N P P S S T T V W W
E F H R S T E S L L O G O Y H P E U R O P
D R N O N I N A O O H L A N C N O O E G R
=Xemu

The solution: New twelve-step self-help group for the hopelessly logorrheic: Onandonanon. A vertiquote should have at most 25 columns (75 letters).

The vertiquote was invented by Xemu.

In a stepped vertiquote, there are two sets of columns with lengths 4 and 3. The two sets of columns (which should be roughly the same length) are sorted and rearranged separately; this makes these puzzles easier than vertiquotes. It can have up to 88 letters. Example:

STEPPED VERTIQUOTE (5 9, 3 4 2 1 5 2. *4)

L R T U Y D E N O W
L F R U T I N M E H
A O D F C D I L I H
D Y S O A

The solution: Truly wonderful, the mind of a child is. Yoda.

The stepped veritquote was invented by V.
